How to Dress for your Daughter's or Son's Wedding: A Guide for the Mother of the Bride or Groom

A message to mother of the bride/groom:

Your son’s or daughter’s special day is coming up! But don’t forget, it’s your special day too. You get to watch your “baby” and their special someone take their first steps into the next chapter of their lives.

The bride is always the most overstated at the wedding (and rightly so), and the guests of course in comparison dress down. But what about the mothers of the bride/groom?

Well, you ladies are special. You’re of course, like the other guests, going to be more understated than the bride, but you also get to make that “mother of the bride/groom” statement, standing out amongst the rest.

Many of you ladies take this as a chance to make a bold and different fashion move to what you’d usually go for, and we’re here for it!

What dresses we recommend based on what type of mother of the bride/groom you are:

The understated mother of the bride/groom:

It's okay to not make a big bold statement. For some of us, it can be uncomfortable feeling like everyone’s looking at you.

So for the mum’s that want to blend in a bit more with the other guests, we recommend going for dresses with:

  • Block colours

  • Symmetrical necklines

  • Cocktail length dresses

  • Lace or embroidery

However, your dress won’t be too bold if you go for just one from the list if you keep accessories simple. It’s often when combining these different touches to the dress that it becomes too bold for you ladies wanting to blend in a bit more.

The mother of bride/groom going bold:

For you ladies wanting to “go big or go home”, there are endless possibilities, but some of our favourite choices are:

  • Asymmetrical neck lines

  • A bold statement piece (such as a dramatic bow)

  • 3D floral embellishments
